WorldSpace Foundation signed an agreement with the Agence Intergouvernementale de la Francophonie (Francophone Agency) to provide channel capacity for a French-language education channel, Canal Éducatif Francophone (Canal EF), on the AfriStar™ satellite. Canal EF is a cultural and social education service that will initially serve schools, universities, training centers and rural associations. Following a pilot phase, which began on March 22, 2000, the service will be expanded to the wider public. Currently, Canal EF is broadcasting on all three AfriStar™ beams. Content includes topics of general health, social development and basic and vocational education (see complete program descriptions and broadcast schedule). The Agency has placed receivers in 500 schools and community centers throughout Africa. The Francophone Agency is a nonprofit, member-state organization comprised of all French-speaking countries in the world. Forty-nine members states from Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, the Middle East and the Pacific are represented at their annual summits. |
